Automated Trading Risk Disclosure
This is a plain-English warning from CryptoGenie LLC, doing business as Genie Trades. You read it, and tick a box to say so, before you buy a Bot Build. It does not list every risk. It is not advice, and it is not a recommendation to trade.
1. Who decides
You bring the rules. We write the code. You decide whether and how to use it. We are not your adviser. Every trade the Bot places is your trade, in your account, under your rules.
2. Trading can lose money
- You can lose all of the money you put into a trade. Options can lose 100% of what you paid, quickly, and often do.
- Selling options, or trading with borrowed money, can lose more than you put in.
- Prices can jump past your stop (a "gap"). A stop is not a guaranteed price. It usually becomes a market order, which can fill far from where you set it.
- Wide spreads, thin trading and fast markets can make your orders fill at worse prices than you expected, or not fill at all.
- Options can be exercised or assigned early, and contracts expire. These can leave you with shares you did not plan to hold.
- Fees, data costs and taxes reduce results. Tax is your matter. We do not give tax advice.
- Your Broker may apply margin and day-trading rules that limit or block trades. We do not check whether your rules suit your account type.
3. Automation adds its own risks
- The Bot does what your rules say, not what you meant. A rule that is wrong, or incomplete, will be carried out exactly.
- Software has bugs. Ours does too. We fix the bugs as set out in the Bot Build Agreement, but we cannot promise there are none.
- A Bot can place orders faster and more often than you would by hand, so a mistake can cost more before you notice.
- Safety limits (such as a maximum order size or daily loss limit) are only as good as the numbers you set. They are not a guarantee against loss.
- We never watch or run your Bot. If it is doing something you did not expect, only you can stop it. Know where the stop and kill switch are.
4. Backtests and paper trading are not predictions
- A backtest shows what your rules would have done in the past, under the assumptions listed in the report. Real trading is different: fills are worse, data has gaps, and the market changes.
- Rules that look good on past data may have been fitted to that data by chance. The more you test and tweak, the more likely this is.
- Options history for expired contracts may not exist, so options backtests can be approximate.
- Paper trading uses pretend money and pretend fills. It is a test of the software. It does not tell you what live results will be.
- "Paper acceptance passed" means the software did what you wrote. It does not mean the rules make money.
5. Computer, internet and software failures
- Your Windows computer or server can crash, restart for updates, lose power or lose its internet connection. Your Bot will stop trading while that happens.
- If the Bot loses its connection, it cannot enter, change or cancel anything until it reconnects. Orders already placed at Interactive Brokers, such as a stop order sitting at the broker, usually stay in place. Orders the Bot has not yet sent do not exist.
- Interactive Brokers, your data provider and the exchanges can have outages, delays, halts or errors. Interactive Brokers can change or limit how automated software connects.
- If data is late or missing, the Bot may stop trading, or may miss trades. It is built to refuse delayed data.
- A restart in the middle of a position can leave the Bot out of sync with your account. It checks on start-up and refuses to continue when it finds something unexpected. You may have to fix that by hand.
- Updates to Windows, to Interactive Brokers' software or to the code libraries we use can break the Bot. The optional maintenance plan covers fixes. Without it, you are on your own.
6. The weekly login
Interactive Brokers requires you to log in again about once a week, with an approval on your phone. We cannot remove that. You do it yourself, with your own login. We never do it for you. Until you do, the Bot cannot trade, and it alerts you. If you forget, you can miss trades, and a stop that was supposed to be placed by the Bot may not be placed.
7. The license check cannot hurt your positions
The Engine checks that your license is valid. If the check fails or our license server is down, it never cancels a stop, never blocks an exit and never stops a running day. At worst a fresh start while you hold nothing can be blocked, after 14 days. See the Engine Software License.
8. Paper first
You must run the Bot on your Interactive Brokers paper account first, for at least 5 sessions, before it can go live. Do not skip it. The Engine refuses live trading until paper acceptance has been signed. Switching to live is your decision and your risk.
9. Your market data
Live trading needs market data you buy from Interactive Brokers, in your own name. Without it the Bot cannot trade. We never share our data or keys with you. If you choose your own Massive (Polygon) account as the data source, you license it yourself, keep the key on your own machine, and are responsible for using it within Massive's terms.
10. What you confirm
By ticking the box you confirm that:
- the strategy is yours and you made every decision in it;
- you place and own every trade, and every result is yours;
- you will run it on paper first;
- options can lose 100% of what you pay, and some trades can lose more;
- we are not your adviser, and you did not rely on us for advice;
- you will not share your Broker login with us;
- you understand the Bot can fail, and that you are responsible for watching it.
